British Motorways

There are more than 2000 miles of British motorways. The first British motorway was the Preston Bypass in Lancashire, opening in 1958 and now part of the M6, which at 236 Miles (380 km) is the longest in Britain.

Motorways are the high-speed roads that allow the movement of vehicles between major towns and cities. A dual carriageway is not a motorway, though they share some similarities. Dual carriageways are roads with two or more carriageways separated by a central reservation, while motorways are designed for higher standards with controlled access and are generally used for long-distance, high-speed travel.

Always closed off to the public is the M96 in Gloucestershire. The 400 metres of simulated motorway is at the Fire Service College at Moreton-in-Marshmock which uses it in the training of fire crews.

Pictured below is a map of some of Britain’s motorways. Can you identify which is which by matching up the letters with the motorway?

You can use the image for your quiz, but not re-publish it, in any format.
