Finding the perfect tie-breaker for a pub quiz is an art. You need a question that is virtually impossible to know exactly, but where a “closest-to-the-pin” guess determines the winner.

In a pub quiz, a tie-breaker is the “sudden death” mechanism used when two or more teams finish the night with the same score. Since you can’t easily split a prize (like a bar tab or a trophy), the tie-breaker decides the definitive winner.

Here is the standard “Golden Rule” for how they work:

The most effective tie-breaker is a question with a numerical answer that is almost impossible to know exactly.

The Process: The Quizmaster reads the question once. The tied teams write their best guess on a scrap of paper and hand it in simultaneously.

The Winner: The “closest regardless of direction” is usually seen as fairer in a pub setting.
