In UK Place Names 06 there are 20 UK place names (towns, cities, etc.), using images as a clue to describe its name. Can you work out what the illustrations are telling you and identify the place’s name? Some of them might be obvious, others may require more thought.
They are a type of pictograph. A pictograph is a picture or image that represents a word or a phrase. A sign with the shape of a dog inside a circle and a slash drawn through it is a pictograph that means “no dogs allowed.” Anything that conveys information using just pictures can be called a pictograph.
