Monopoly Board Game

The history of the Monopoly Board Game goes back to 1903, when American anti-monopolist Lizzie Magie created a game called The Landlord’s Game. Parker Brothers later bought the game’s patent and began marketing the game on 5th November 1935. The original version of the game was based on the streets of Atlantic City, New Jersey. John Waddington Ltd. obtained a license and began to manufacture the game in the United Kingdom in 1936. Victor Watson, the managing director of Waddingtons, felt that for the game to be a success in the United Kingdom, they would have to be replace American locations. So, Victor and his secretary Marjory Phillips went to London to scout out locations.

The Monopoly Board Game consists of forty spaces containing twenty-eight properties—twenty-two streets (grouped into eight distinct colour groups), four railway stations, and two utilities—three Chance spaces, three Community Chest spaces, a Luxury Tax space, an Income Tax space, and the four corner squares: GO, (In) Jail/Just Visiting, Free Parking, and Go to Jail.

Hasbro acquired Parker Bros. in 1991 and thus the Monopoly Board Game.
