Extinct Animals

When thinking about extinct animals, people usually think of dinosaurs, relying on their limited knowledge gained from the Jurassic Park films, which often, palaeontologists have now discovered,  portrayed them inaccurately. Scientists estimate that 99.9% of all plants and animals that have ever lived are extinct.

The word dinosaur is from the Greek deinos (“terrible”, “horrible”, “fearful”) and sauros (“lizard”).

Depicted below, are twenty extinct animals, can you put a name to them? They are not to any scale. Some names are short; others are tongue twisters. To help, the names you can match up with are listed below.

To download an individual image, right-click on the enlarged image you want and select “Save image as”. This will open a save dialog where you can save the file to your computer. You can use any of the images for your quizzes, but not re-publish them, in any format. The images are in SVG format (Scalable Vector Graphics), an XML-based vector image format. Usable in most, if not all, word processors such as Microsoft Word, Google Docs, WPS Office, LibreOffice, etc. To download an individual image, right-click on the enlarged image you want and select “Save image as”. The picture’s filename is its answer. Click on the image to have a closer look (bigger image).
