It used to make me hot and bothered when I saw the word Xmas instead of Christmas. Well, perhaps not actually hot-and-bothered, but it certainly irked me. I’m not religiously offended; I just thought it was laziness, promulgated with text messaging.

However, the first known use of “Xmas” was in 1721. So, it’s not SMS then.
I’ve since learned that in the early days of the Christian church, Christians used the letter X as a secret symbol to indicate their membership in the church to others. The Greek letter chi (X), is the first letter of the Greek word Christos (Christ).
Advertisements and headlines use “Xmas” for brevity. I suppose that’s mostly okay, but it doesn’t excuse anyone from using THX instead of thanks outside of text messaging.

By the way, the word “Christmas” does not appear in the Christian Bible. The nativity of Jesus as a formal holy day within the church had to wait until the early 4th century.
