The United Kingdom has around 1,500 distinct rivers, though most remain small and localised. Only 29 of these qualify as major river systems.

Historically, mainland Britain boasted 7,000 miles of canals and navigable rivers. To achieve this, engineers built intricate locks and cuts to tame wild rivers and make them passable for trade. As early as 1424, Parliament passed acts for the River Lea that tasked corporations and other governing bodies with maintaining these navigation routes.

The Modern Waterway Network

Today, the UK retains about 5,000 navigable miles out of its historical 7,000. Of those surviving routes, boaters actively navigate about 3,000 miles. You can find over 2,000 miles of these canals and rivers flowing directly through city centres, past residential neighbourhoods, and out into the scenic countryside.

Major Navigable River Systems

Several key systems dominate commercial and recreational boating. These include the River Thames, River Severn, River Trent, River Mersey, the Humber, and the Yorkshire Ouse.

The River Severn: The Severn claims the title of the UK’s longest river, travelling 220 miles from Wales down to the Bristol Channel.
The River Thames: Spanning 215 miles, the Thames plunges to the greatest depths in the UK. It reaches a maximum depth of 66 feet (20 meters) near London Bridge and throughout parts of its lower estuary.

Who Manages the Waterways Today?

Two primary organisations handle the immense task of keeping these waterways open and safe:

The Canal & River Trust: This charitable trust manages most of the interconnected canal and river network across England and Wales. They care for over 2,000 miles of historic waterways, along with thousands of listed structures and wildlife habitats.
The Environment Agency: As the UK’s second-largest navigation authority, the Environment Agency manages 1,010 kilometres of navigable rivers, including the non-tidal River Thames and the Anglian waterways.

Various other local bodies and trusts take responsibility for smaller, independent sections of the navigation network.
