A road sign that uses images to convey a meaning is a type of pictogram. In maths, charts that use images or symbols instead of bars are also pictograms. Egyptian hieroglyphs began as pictograms. Although many people think of Egyptian hieroglyphs as logographic or pictographic, combining symbols for entire words with images for individual sounds.
