The Fascinating World of Idioms

An idiom is a phrase or expression with a hidden figurative meaning. Consequently, this meaning differs completely from the literal definition of the individual words. Historically, the word “idiom” comes from the Greek term idioma. This ancient word translates to “peculiar phrasing.”

Because communities create these unique expressions over time, idioms usually reflect specific cultures. In fact, people often liken them to private jokes shared between native speakers. Furthermore, geographic distance can alter these phrases over time. Therefore, you should bear in mind that each idiom might have a unique regional variation.
