A pictogram (also pictogramme, pictograph, or simply picto. Also, an ideogram that represents an idea or concept independent of any language.) uses a graphical symbol to convey meaning. A road sign that uses images to convey a meaning is a type of pictogram. In maths, charts that use images or symbols instead of bars are also pictograms. Egyptian hieroglyphs began as pictograms. Although many people think of Egyptian hieroglyphs as logographic or pictographic, combining symbols for entire words with images for individual sounds. That is, it is a system that is partly logographic and partly alphabetic. In Picture Play 2 below, there are 20 common phrases, expressions, or sayings, shown as pictograms. To download an individual image, right-click on the enlarged image you want and select “Save image as”. This will open a save dialog where you can save the file to your computer. You can use any of the images for your quizzes, but not re-publish them, in any format. The images are in SVG format (Scalable Vector Graphics), an XML-based vector image format.
