Discovering UK Wildlife

The UK is home to several surprising, rare, and unusual wild animals. Many people don’t realise these creatures roam our countryside, coasts, and towns. While many animals are native, humans have deliberately or inadvertently introduced several others. Conservationists have also successfully re-introduced native species that previously faced extinction. You can learn more about these ongoing conservation efforts at organisations like The Wildlife Trusts.

The Grey Squirrel: An Introduced Species

Starting around 1876, wealthy landowners and Victorian collectors introduced grey squirrels to the UK from North America. Historians credit T.V. Brocklehurst with an early recorded release at Henbury Park in Cheshire. Today, they are a common sight in woodlands and urban parks across the country.
