Discovering the Birds of Great Britain

Great Britain hosts a vibrant tapestry of wildlife, with observers recording over 600 bird species in the wild. This impressive number spans a wide spectrum, ranging from common garden visitors to majestic coastal seabirds. Because gardens offer thriving microhabitats rich in natural life, they attract many bird species throughout the changing seasons. Furthermore, while some of these birds live in Britain year-round, others arrive only as seasonal visitors.

Among these many species, the diminutive Wren claims the title of the most populous wild bird in Britain, boasting an estimated 11 million breeding pairs. Following closely behind, the beloved Robin takes second place with 7.35 million pairs.

Identifying and Downloading Your Sightings

Fortunately, you no longer must guess what you are looking at. You can instantly identify your bird by uploading a photo to the Merlin Bird ID app, or match its features using the Bird Spot website.

How many birds can you name on your own? To test your knowledge, simply hover your mouse pointer over the grey box below any image to reveal the answer (or press and hold your finger on a mobile device).

Ultimately, you can use any of these images for your personal quizzes, though copyright restrictions prohibit republishing them in any other format. As a final helpful hint, the picture’s filename always reveals its correct answer.
