Understanding Puppets: From Slang to Stage
In slang, people use the derogatory term “puppet” to describe someone who surrenders their autonomy and mindlessly obeys an outside influence. In the literal sense, however, a puppet is an object—often resembling a human, animal, or mythical creature—that a puppeteer actively animates and manipulates.
The Evolution of the Craft
Historically, language shaped how we categorise these figures. For instance, the English language once treated “marionette” as a direct synonym for “puppet.” Today, however, English speakers use “marionette” specifically to describe a string-controlled puppet. Meanwhile, French speakers still maintain the original tradition, using “marionette” as their generic label for all puppets.
Furthermore, artisans construct these figures from a wide range of materials, tailoring the design to the puppet’s specific form and intended use. Because of this flexibility, puppeteers utilise several distinct styles:
- Sock Puppets: To operate this simple style, the puppeteer inserts their hand into a closed, sock-like cloth sleeve. Consequently, the opening and closing of their hands create the puppet’s mouth movements.
- Rod-Hand Puppets: To achieve more complex movements, the puppeteer steps up to this design. While one hand animates the head, the puppeteer uses their second hand to manipulate rods that control the puppet’s arms and other appendages.
Crossing Over into Pop Culture
While creators originally designed many modern puppets for children’s television, several famous characters have successfully crossed over into adult entertainment. For example, British entertainer Rod Hull and his famously chaotic partner, Emu, regularly delighted and shocked adult audiences with their aggressive, unpredictable comedy routines.
