Since the 1980s, video games have captivated global audiences, evolving from a niche hobby into a dominant cultural phenomenon. Throughout this digital revolution, creative developers have given rise to a vast pantheon of iconic personalities that define entire generations.

Furthermore, these figures have successfully leapt off the screen and into the mainstream. Whether they originated in the pixelated trenches of arcade classics like Space Invaders or the sprawling, cinematic worlds of Grand Theft Auto, these characters now drive massive marketing campaigns and shape modern branding.

In fact, many of these digital icons have achieved a level of fame that rivals Hollywood movie stars. To celebrate this legacy, I have curated a selection of the heavy hitters—the legendary characters who truly “made” it in the industry.

Ultimately, the challenge now falls to you: can you recognise these legends and put a name to each character?

To download an individual image, right-click on the enlarged image you want and select “Save image as”. This will open a save dialog where you can save the file to your computer. You can use any of the images for your quizzes, but not re-publish them, in any format. The images are in SVG format (Scalable Vector Graphics), an XML-based vector image format. Usable in most, if not all, word processors such as Microsoft Word, Google Docs, WPS Office, LibreOffice, etc. The picture’s filename is its answer.
