All brands have Logos of some sort, whether it be a graphic mark, emblem, or symbol. They are all around us when you go shopping, for example. Companies spend a lot of money on research and on designing a memorable logo.
Douglas Harper’s Online Etymology Dictionary states that the first surviving written record of the term ‘logo’ dates back to 1937, and that the term was “probably a shortening of logogram”. The current era of logo design began in the 1870s with the first abstract logo, the Bass red triangle. As of 2014, many corporations, products, brands, services, agencies, and other entities use an ideogram (sign or icon), an emblem (symbol), or a combination of a sign and an emblem as a logo. As a result, only a few of the thousands of ideograms in circulation are recognisable without a name.
An effective logo may combine an ideogram with the company name (logotype) to emphasise the name over the graphic and create a unique design through letters, colours, and additional graphic elements. How well do you recall a brand name from the logo? Logos 2 will test your knowledge.
