As of November 2022, there are 76 UK cities. At one time a city was a city in England and Wales if it had an Anglican cathedral. However, this is no longer the case. Queen Victoria granted Birmingham city status on 14th January, 1889 and was the first English town without a cathedral to receive city status. Cathedrals are now not relevant to whether a town becomes a city. Cities often serve as centres for culture, commerce, and government. The monarch grants city status in the United Kingdom.
